<p>Does marketing your start-up company petrify your checkbook? Tri-media advertising does wonders for corporate brand building but it&#8217;s not the only way to spread the good word. With non conventional promotion, you avoid costly tri media expenses and create an almost demonic cult-following for your new product or service. All you need is a bit of unconventional thinking.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s get down to brass tacks.</p>
<p>Since 1999, I&#8217;ve been launching successful start-ups. Most were pure online initiatives, but two are click-and-mortar hybrids. Today, each business unit makes enough to pay the utility bills, indulge in fancy dinners, and fly off on exotic vacations. Just key my name in google and you&#8217;ll have an idea of my different passions.</p>
<p>Skyrocketing my pursuits to niche dominance doesn&#8217;t take a Ph.D degree. Allow me to bare my secrets:</p>
<p>1. ESTABLISH A PRODUCT-CENTRIC ONLINE COMMUNITY. eGroups, yahoogroups and google groups allow the establishment of virtual families where people of like minds converge. WIth just a group of twenty active participants, you create a massive product buzz that eventually snowballs into unstoppable viral marketing.</p>
<p>My earliest endeavor revolved around business NLP, mind advancement and dating. Coaching was my passion and TV advertising would have cost a bleeding arm. I tackled the challenge by deploying an eGroup account and posting free self-help articles. At the 10th post, curious websurfers began signing up and participating. They left comments, added suggestions and invited other friends to jump in. The forum then grew exponentially and I witnessed a living, organic group of 8000+ members. People traded stories, joked, passed on tips and even flirted outrageously. For me, this meant a goldmine of targetted advertising: I would post one product announcement every quarter to a community already avid on the subject!</p>
<p>2. GIVE THEM FREE LUNCHES. Everybody loves a freebie; I snap up product samples at the mall or grocery store. When I get home and try that free shampoo sachet, I&#8217;d eventually come back and buy a bottle at a bloodcurdling $19.95. Mall owners were on to something!</p>
<p>Free eBooks, articles and mp3 recordings are hot downloads on the web. To target the army of freebie addicts, I jumpstarted Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Audition. Every month saw me marching out armadas of pdfs and mp3s. They were my eager footsoldiers, poised to strike at at freeware download sites.</p>
<p>So how did this benefit me? Each pdf and mp3 is armed with a resource segment containing my URLs and services. As these marketing warriors circulate the web, they stir up a storm of awareness&#8230; and direct traffic to my sites.</p>
<p>3. GIVE LIFETIME MONEY BACK GUARANTEES. What would do if you saw a product that trumpted &#8220;Unlimited Lifetime Satisfaction Guarantee?&#8221; Of course you wouldn&#8217;t think twice about buying it. There&#8217;s no risk on the part of the buyer&#8230; after all the product can be returned ten days&#8211; or ten months after purchase. Let your confidence in your product show by backing it up with unconditional guarantees.</p>
<p>4. TREAT CUSTOMERS LIKE FAMILY. Avoid canned responses. Reply immediately. Offer solutions, not qualified excuses. Throw in value-adding  surprises such as unannounced freebies and 24/7 tech support. Friendly gestures might cost a bit of money, but it goes a long way in building warm customer relationships. You want to create friends out of your clients.</p>
<p>5.PRAISE THE COMPETITION. You may be the best at what you do, but if you bad mouth the competition, you cast a pall upon your reputation. Share the glory with others by giving praise and credit where they&#8217;re due.</p>

<p>Often people create what they call a viral marketing piece when it is nothing more than a brochure and an advertisement. It is way too self serving. It has no possibility of creating buzz. While there is no guaranteed formula for creating a viral marketing piece, there are many things you can do to increase its effectiveness and its viral nature.</p>
<p><b>2. Failing to make it interesting enough to pass along</b></p>
<p>Whether or not there are external incentives to encourage the viral spread, if you failed to make the article or e-book interesting enough with high quality content that is useful or entertaining, you couldn t pay them enough to pass it along. If on the other hand it is very useful, high quality or entertaining, it will get passed along with or without any other incentives.</p>
<p><b>3. Failing to provide incentives to encourage people to pass your message along</b></p>
<p>While there are many successes where the sender was not rewarded for passing on viral information, it works better if you can provide an incentive. Provide an incentive that you don t have to pay up front. Instead provide a success incentive. If the desired outcome is met then you give them money, commissions, discounts, extended memberships, additional MP3 recordings, more articles, more eBooks, etc. Whatever incentive you decide to use, make sure it is easy to sign up for and easy to collect.</p>
<p><b>4. Failing to provide an incentive for people to respond to your call to action</b></p>
<p>The way to sell with a viral marketing piece is to do so at the very end, in the conclusion, in the summary or in the resource box. It doesn t need to be a hard pitch, just an offer for an ethical bribe that will move them to visit your website, call your 800 number or send an email to get whatever you are offering.</p>
<p>Experience has shown that the incentive should be related to your product or service. If you are a law firm, don t offer a chance to win a Corvette or an iPod. Too many unqualified people will sign up and waste your time following up with them. Instead if you are a law firm specializing in Intellectual Property, offer a free e-book on  How you can increase the value of your company with patents and trademarks. </p>
<p><b>5. Failing to effectively promote their viral campaigns</b></p>
<p>Because we ve heard of some success stories where no promotion was needed, it is easy to fall into the trap that yours too will be one of those. I m not sure what the statistics are but the vast majority of viral marketing requires promotion to make them successful.</p>
<p><b>6. Failing to encourage others to pass it along</b></p>
<p>There is a wonderful piece of wisdom you should apply to viral marketing    you have not because you ask not.  Does your viral marketing ask the reader to pass this along to others? This can be done in the resource box with something very simple like,  If you found this useful, please pass it onto others that might be helped by it too. </p>
<p>If it is a viral article and you have also it published on your website, have a button or link on the page that says  Send to your friends.  While it is true the  Send to your friends  button won t make it viral all by itself you never know which  friend  that gets it might decide to promote it to their list of 100,000.</p>
<p><b>7. Failing to send out anything less than a blockbuster success</b></p>
<p>While it would be nice to repeat viral marketing successes like Blair Witch, Hotmail, Purple Cow or ICQ those are rare occurrences. Just because your idea falls a bit short of phenomenal doesn t mean it isn t worth doing. Let s say you shoot for exponential viral results and only obtain a moderate success, it is still a success. The fact you got free visitors to come to your site is great.</p>
<p>I love Michael Jordan s quote when he attempted to go into baseball after his wildly successful basketball career.  I can accept failure, but I can t accept not trying.  Even if you think it won t blow away Blair Witch s success, try it anyway.</p>
<p><b>8. Focusing on a single viral piece rather than a viral process</b></p>
<p>One thing I ve noticed in my business career is that we tend to adopt the John Wayne syndrome, go big or go home. We give it ONE try and if it fails we go home. I don t know of successful business people or successful marketing campaigns that take that approach. Instead of giving it this one shot and then not doing anything after that, create a process for creating, promoting, testing and measuring continual viral marketing efforts.</p>
<p><b>9. Failing to test and track the results</b></p>
<p>To be successful you need to experiment with different titles for the article or e-book; test different ethical bribes; try different promotional methods; approach different list owners. Find all of the elements that can be tested in your project, test various combinations and measure the results.</p>
<p><b>10. Not recognizing it is different from word-of-mouth marketing</b></p>
<p>I fell in love with word-of-mouth marketing early in my consulting career. After 10 years of consulting I analyzed every project I d worked on, every client I d worked for and wrote down the source. To my shock, 95% of all of them came from word-of-mouth. The good news was it was cheap (free). The bad news it was unpredictable and couldn t be controlled on-demand like I needed.</p>
<p>Viral marketing is like word-of-mouth in that one person passes it on to another but typical word-of-mouth comes from one person asking the other if they know how to solve a problem. It is much more reactive than proactive. Viral marketing is proactive. A person who reads a viral article or e-book immediately thinks of 5, 10, 500 or even 1,000 people that should know about this and they send it via email or put it up on their website or post in on their blog. Viral isn t one person coughing in another person s face, it is one person coughing in a crowded room causing it to spread like wildfire.</p>

<p>After marketing on the internet for quite some time, through the school of hard knocks, I have learned many valuable lessons.  I would like to share these with you, as it may save you a lot of heartache and disappointment.</p>
<p>If you have to pay any money to get into any kind of business, my advice would be, don&#8217;t do it.  If you choose to go this route, be very wary and carefully study what you are getting into, as chances are you will be the one losing money.  There are some businesses that are worthwhile but they are very few and far between.  Off the top of my head, I cannot name one.   Too many people are lured into an internet business by a get rich quick scheme.  Instead, you might find yourself getting poor even quicker.</p>
<p>A newbie to the world of the internet must not be discouraged.  It takes time to research, find a good business, or even find your own niche.  I would advise you to take your time.  Never jump into anything.  Do not let anyone pressure you to get into anything, no matter how good it may sound.  If you are undecided and think you may be taking a chance, don&#8217;t do it.  Make sure it is a business with a solid foundation.  Make sure you can earn an income instead of chasing dreams that never come true.  However, once you do find your niche, don&#8217;t expect to make money right away.  To be successful on the internet, one must establish a presence, become well known and trusted.  This process does take time.  Don&#8217;t give up.  You must persevere.</p>
<p>Rather than having a ready made web site that you buy your way into, it is much better to have your own website that you can control, and I will explain the benefits of having your own site later in this article.</p>
<p>I belong to an internet community, but I am going to let you in on a few secrets.</p>
<p>1.  Very little of my business comes from this internet community, as the majority of people are out to sell their own products and get rich quick.  For them to actually go into your site, you need a gimmick to draw them in.  Don&#8217;t include a price in any advertisements or notices.  Even though they may say very nice things, they will actually be just that, very nice things.  Most will have no intentions of even going into your site.  Find something to lure them in.  Something that would entice them.  Once you have created an appetite for something they want, you will see better results.  As an example, I have an online women&#8217;s magazine, a perfect way to lure someone in my site is with free recipes, all kinds of recipes.  I will post one irresistible recipe and that will get them hooked.</p>
<p>2.  Do you belong to Google AdSense?  If you do not, join it, as these ads will make money for you. At the beginning it will be minimal, but as the months go by and you get more traffic, you will seen the your money flow grow a little more each month.  If you are not familiar with them, they are ads that advertise different things to different places.  For example, someone in the United States and someone in England looking at the same exact page will see a different ad which is tailored especially for them.  The ads will also pertain to your website, and as you change or add something, you will see a correlating ad appear.</p>
<p>3:  As I told you, I do very little of my business with the internet community I belong to.  Viral marketing is actually the way to go.  Viral marketing is another term for word of mouth.  Blogging is a wonderful advertising tool.  However, not just advertising this or that.  Make it interesting.  Talk about things, tell about your life, people you know, all sorts of things, make it an online diary and in the appropriate places, just insert a link here and a link there.  That will bring in a lot of traffic as you gain a following.  Try to do this every day or almost every day, as establishing a presence on the internet is your main goal.  A new website takes weeks to be seen on the internet.  However, for some reason, a blog will be picked up in a matter of days.  So if you make it interesting with links here and there you will gain a following and your site will, therefore, get the desired traffic at a much faster rate.  Familiarize yourself with blog directories and pinging.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t like autosurfs, as anyone who has their site on one of these merely wants to advertise their site.  Very few are actually looking for an opportunity.  I have never made money with autosurfs.  At some point in time, they are the winners and I am the loser, so I gave this up a very long time ago.</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier, I do not advise having a ready made site in any way, shape, or form.  You will gain better results with your own site.  This may require quite a bit of study on your part, but you will benefit by this in the end.  Again, do your research, find your niche.  Find something that the public wants.  Something different.  Never let your site stay stagnant.  Always ad or change something.  By always adding something to your site, the crawlers will come by and pick bits and pieces up.  Before you know it, you will be in a top position by just working on your site and keeping it active.  The crawlers will become accustomed to how often you update your site and come around at these appointed times, whether it be once a week, every day, or however often.  Therefore, keep your site current, and always study.  Internet marketing is changing every day and one must keep abreast of this fast paced and growing market.  You really needn&#8217;t be overly concerned with metatags, submissions to search engines, or paying for anything to get a better spot.  Paying for advertising can land you in the poor house rather quickly.  Pay per click ads can be absolute killers.  You might notice that you have tons of traffic but not one sale.  And you pay for every click.  Unless you are very experienced in this, don&#8217;t do it.  Believe me, I&#8217;ve tried them all.</p>
<p>Select a common phrase that you use all the time in your blog, in your website, while advertising. or wherever.  The crawlers will become familiar with this phrase and associate it with you.  Make it different, make it catchy.</p>
<p>If you decide that internet marketing is for you, it is most important that you do not become discouraged.  You may not make a cent for many months.  I do wish you quick success, but if it does not happen, you must persevere.  Keep doing what you are doing and it will happen slowly and in time.  Make sure you lay a sturdy foundation first.</p>
<p>And if I can leave you with the most important aspect of internet marketing, first and foremost, be a friend to everyone.  This is the number one rule in marketing.  Be a friend first, and sales will come later.</p>

<p>Viral marketing strategies are so powerful that whole ebooks and courses have been written on how to implement and use such techniques to squeeze the most out of them. As once set up correctly you may never need to pay for advertising again </p>
<p>So what types of techniques work?</p>
<p>Well as I said there have been book written on the subject, so here&#8217;s a quick run down of a few techniques which I&#8217;ve used to help create steady streams of traffic to my websites.</p>
<p>Writing and submitting articles such as this is a great technique for getting more links back to your site and for drawing in more visitors, as people publish them in ezines, on their blogs and websites and you&#8217;ll find them popping up all over the place.  If you go to Google and type in &#8220;How to profit from your home business blog&#8221; you&#8217;ll find about 9,290 listings of that article which I wrote a while back it&#8217;s also the most popular download at contentdesk.com with over 4200 downloads last time I checked. So if you&#8217;re not regularly writing and submitting articles, why not?</p>
<p>Power tip: Make your article viral, by adding at the end something like this to encourage distribution:</p>
<p>&#8220;(Feel free to use this article online and in your email newsletters as long as you leave it intact and do not alter it in anyway. The by-line and biography must remain in the article.)&#8221;</p>
<p>Putting together and distributing viral ebooks is another strategy I&#8217;ve used with good results. The key is to make them &#8216;brandible&#8217; so that consumers can brand the ebook with their own affiliate links, this gives them an incentive to pass them on and on. A few places you can give these away are, to your customers, website visitors or in article/forum signatures. Have a look at my resource box for an awesome free viral ebook which is like nothing you&#8217;ll have ever seen.</p>
<p>These are two strategies you can implement straight away. Other viral marketing techniques you could use are:</p>
<p>-Creating and distribution podcasts on your niche; turn your articles in to podcasts and you&#8217;ll add a new stream of visitors to your site, don&#8217;t forget to submit them to podcast directories.</p>
<p>-Create viral videos and submit them to google video, ifilm and other video related websites. Done properly, these are a very effective strategy.</p>
<p>-Add refer-a-friend scripts to your site, these are freely available just do an internet search, I&#8217;ve used &#8220;Spread The Word&#8221; which is a good free script. If you give away an incentive for referring friends (e.g. viral ebook) you can really enhance the effect of this strategy.</p>
<p>There are many more viral marketing techniques that you could use, focus on one at a time and keep working until you get the results you want. Decide now to take action and take your business to the next level.</p>

Though the term viral depicts virus in the worse possible way, it isn t what you may think. You do not use a computer virus to spread your business.</p>
<p>Viral Marketing also known as viral advertising is a marketing technique used to build the public s awareness of your product, company, or web site. Many forms of the media are used to reach out to the public without actually promoting the product. The premise is to use methods that are somewhat addictive in nature to get people  hooked  and obligated or amused enough to actually  pass it on  along with the product, company, or web site advertisement.</p>
<p>Basically, marketers ride on the idea that if people like the content of a media enough, they will  pass it on  to their friends, family, prospects, or customers. They sponsor the particular media such as cool flash games, funny videos, amusing stories, or informational reports, which are passed on with the company brand, logo, product description, or any other content to help promote the company or its product.</p>
<p>Viral marketing has become a popular means of marketing and advertising because of the relatively low cost. To avoid being labeled as  spam mail , viral marketing counts on the eagerness of people to pass on the product. If the person sees the name of the person they re familiar with as the sender, they won t block it but, open it instead.</p>
<p>Many companies offer incentives such as rebates and discounts when prospects or customers help in spreading their viral marketing. They rely on the number of recipients viral marketing gets from one person, in determining the amount of incentive they can be attributed with.</p>
<p>The foremost advantage of viral marketing is the publicity and public awareness your site or company receives. You get to generate a traffic flow of potential customers. With a little imagination, some incentives, you can reach out to a great number of people and announce your existence.</p>
<p>Many web sites are now aware of the effectiveness of viral marketing. Along with other promotional methods such as search engine optimization, viral marketing could easily push you ahead in the ratings game. Consider the benefits, increased traffic flow, customers, and revenue increase that could incur from this one marketing resource alone!</p>
<p>As mentioned earlier, viral marketing is a great way to make people aware of your online presence as you get them to pass your advertisement along, like a virus. Many affiliate programs and webmasters offer reports and ebooks centered around their product and in many cases, they offer free branding rights which permit you to  brand  your website and affiliate link into the report or ebook. As you pass these on to your customers, prospects, you increase awareness of your online presence and hopefully increase sales and revenue in the process.
